FORBIDDEN LOVE

Famous When Dead Gallery
207 Victoria Street, West Melbourne.

With all this talk about Australia illustrators -- new galleries popping up from Gorker to Lamington Drive, fighting the good fight for Aussie drawing -- we're forgetting the overseas illustrators. The ones who supposedly get all the commissions while our guys subsist on HB graphite nutrients. You can check out some drawings by Seattle's Amy Davis until 3pm today. They are the product of a whimsical mind bred in the birthplace of grunge. Given this, they're kind of disappointing. Big-eyed skinny girls wearing torn fishnets; an emo kid with wide-ranging self-harm injuries. The forbidden-love themes is cute and the captions are strange. "Your complaints bore me," says a mangy old dog, drawn in ink and coloured-in with felt tip. Australian illustrators take heed: this canine is talking to you! Davis might draw like she's in year 9, but she's exhibited at Colette! Get out there and do it like Seattle's cheering you on.
